Diesel prices by province
Fuel is your biggest bill after your drivers. Run it like one.
Knowing the average price this week is a good start. The money is in knowing what your trucks paid, on which load, and whether that load still made money after fuel. TorqueAI is built around profit, and diesel is where most of it leaks out.
Fuel card charges come in by themselves
EFS, Comdata, AtoB, WEX, Love's and more. No more downloading the week's transactions from the card portal.
Every fill-up tied to a truck, driver and load
See fuel cost next to what the load paid, so you know which lanes and trucks eat your margin.
Duplicates flagged on import
The same fill-up doesn't get counted, or taken off a driver's pay, twice.
Profit per load after fuel, before you book
Real cost per mile from your own fuel, pay and repairs, not a rough guess.
Fuel deductions and surcharge on settlements
Owner-operator fuel comes off the right settlement, and surcharge tables are applied for you.
One place to audit it all
All fuel by truck and driver in one list, so the weekly check takes minutes, not an afternoon.
How to audit your diesel spend in 10 minutes a week
- Pull last week's fuel card transactions for every truck.
- Compare the price per gallon each driver paid with this week's average for that state on this page.
- Flag fill-ups well above average. Common reasons: an off-network stop with no discount, a pricey city station, or a card used where it shouldn't be.
- Check gallons against the truck's tank size and the miles it ran. A fill bigger than the tank is a red flag.
- Look at fuel cost per load, not just per week. A lane can look fine on revenue and still lose money after fuel and deadhead.
In TorqueAI, steps 1 and 5 are already done: fuel card charges land on the right truck, driver and load automatically. See fuel deductions on settlements and fuel card integrations.
Frequently asked questions
Where do these diesel prices come from?
They are average retail diesel pump prices from 476 stations in major cities across the U.S. and Canada, updated every week. We average them by state and province and leave out prices that look wrong. They are a weekly snapshot of what drivers see at the pump, not an official government average.
How often are the prices updated?
Once a week. Each page shows the week the prices are from at the top.
Why are Canadian prices shown per litre?
Diesel is sold by the litre in Canada, in Canadian dollars, so that is what drivers see at the pump. One U.S. gallon is about 3.785 litres.
Why do diesel prices change so much from state to state?
Mostly fuel taxes, how far the state is from refineries and pipelines, local fuel rules, and how much competition there is between truck stops. State fuel taxes alone can differ by tens of cents a gallon between neighbouring states.
Does buying cheaper fuel in another state lower my fuel tax?
Not really. IFTA, the fuel tax report you file every quarter, works out the tax you owe based on the miles you drove in each state, and credits the tax you already paid at the pump. The fuel tax part evens out. The difference in the price before tax is real savings, which is why fuel stops are worth planning.
How can a trucking company cut its diesel costs?
Fuel at stops in your fuel card's discount network, plan fill-ups in cheaper states along the route, cut idling, and check every fuel card charge each week against the local average. Most of all, look at fuel cost per load, so you stop taking loads that only look good before fuel.
